• Cost: Purchased for 10 guineas in 1892 ($48.67 at the time). It is insured for more than $75,000, but the Hockey Hall of Fame's Paul Oke sets its true worth at ''priceless.''

• 'Pocket Rocket' Henri Richard's name appears most often on the Cup. He played on 11 of the Montreal Canadiens' 24 Cup-winning teams, most of any franchise.

• Stanley who? Frederick Arthur Stanley was governor general of Canada from 1888 to 1893. When his sons competed on a team that played for Canada's amateur hockey championship, Lord Stanley donated a silver bowl to go to the winner.

• History: Amateur teams competed for it from 1893 to 1910. Pro teams have competed for it since. It has been the symbol of NHL supremacy since 1926. • How it grew: The Cup began as a simple silver bowl, but as names of winning teams were engraved on it, 16 silver bands were added to the base. Now, when a band is filled, an upper band is removed and placed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto (two so far). There are spaces for seven more winners before this happens again.
